Petition to the Sub-Committee on International Human Rights (SDIR)
Calling for Urgent Hearing on Human Rights Crisis IN Tibet
We, the Undersigned, are submitting this petition to bring to your kind attention the worsening situation in Tibet and the urgent need for Canadian and international intervention.
Since March of this year, more than95young men and women have immolated themselves out of desperation about the situation in Tibet and to draw the world’s attention to the plight of the Tibetan people. Over 83 people have died of self-immolation and hundreds have been arrested for calling for basic human rights in the Tibetan areas. The Chinese authorities have resorted to further repressive measures by bringing in more military and paramilitary forces, making house-to-house searches and large numbers of arrests, expelling monks from monasteries, punishing the families and communities of protesters, characterising immolations as criminal offences, arresting those associated with immolators, restricting communications and travel in areas where immolations have occurred and personal vilification of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. These measures further aggravate the already tense situation instead of addressing the genuine grievances of the Tibetan people.
In the light of the horrific events unfolding inside Tibet, we would like to request the Sub-Committee on International Human Rights (SDIR) to conduct an emergency hearing on the current crisis in Tibet. Mr. Tsewang Dhondup, one of the victims of Chinese Communist regime’s brutality, has been able to escape from Tibet and reached Toronto on December 05, 2012. We, the Undersigned, would like to request the Sub-Committee to issue a Statement of Concern during the present session of Parliament about the situation in Tibet. Canada has been a leading voice for the protection of human rights. It is now time for a clear and strong Statement of Concern on the worsening situation in Tibet. A favourable consideration of our request would be highly appreciated.
