Even the Moon Would Weep Translated by CHEN Kai & Micheal Stainton
In commemoration of the Tiananmen Square Massacre June 4th 1989.Thousands were killed, hundreds forced into exile, many disappeared and many still on the blacklist.
I thought
Fleeing far from the pain of the wound
Would wash me foreverWould wash away the stains of mourning
Open scars of memory unwilling to heal
Twisting always into new shapesUsing the string of memory in purity and honesty
Plaiting many markers of pure white To decorate the garden path
Death - once again there are party decorations.
Behind me
Suddenly opening a bloodstained balcony The murderer
Politely invites the people to enter
All those memories again rush in at once
All those wounds repainted with fresh bright colours
All the screams rehearsed again behind the scenery
All the deaths once more reenacted in living life
In ghastly flickering lightThe scenery swirls crazily around
Yet in the flashing of an eye the stage is utterly unchanged
After the rush of the crowd the plot keeps the same old text
Only painOnly pain is always embodied anewSharp scalpels slicing all my supple softness
Timidly testing its wings a laugh
Catches in the downpour of my throat
It doesn’t need to come out
It has nowhere to go
In the mist the white jasmine dies and blooms again Every attempt to set outRepeatedly releases the gathered drops of laughterBrokenhearted the wild geese never return
We can only hope for another earthshaking collapse
Chang-E and Nü-Wa lie buried without hope
A few young dragonflies
Boldly break open the Milky Way
In the sky colours of hope appearPain and memory begin again to spread through the universal weeping
In the cool breeze every branch spreads out its arms
Sealed tombstones rise to holding their heads in lamentWeeping onto the cold shoulders
Behind them, white roses carefully open
The winds in June once again sweep over our faces
Finally
All the stars tenderly lean over The moon boldly marches outThere is a thrill of tearsBlinking eyes across the earth
Await the suns honest rising
When all the wounds will never reopen.
