Packer

To Know and Serve God

The meeting began at 8.15 p.m. Its high point was a sermon preached by
the Revd Earl Langston, an elderly Church of England parson from the
south-coast resort of Weymouth. The first half of his sermon ( which was preached in a
rather ponderous manner) left Packer unmoved. But the second half
spoke to him deeply. During the next twenty minutes, Langston told his
audience of his own conversion, which took place at a boy's camp.
There had been some minor thefts from the camp, and some of the boys
and leaders had stayed up all night to ensure there were no further
losses. He told of how he had been on this 'night watch' at the camp,
and had been challenged by one of the camp leaders as to whether he
was a Christian or not. It was this challenge which forced him to the
recognition that he was not, as a matter of fact, a Christian, and
thus led on to his personal response to Christ. He told his audience
of how he had then written to his parents and told them of this
   momentous decision.

During this narrative, Packer suddenly- and traumatically, as he
recalls-realized that he was not a Christian. Though not a person
given to thinking in images, he found a picture arising from within
his mind. The picture was that of someone looking from outside through
a window into a room where some people were having a party. Inside the
room, people were enjoying themselves by playing games. The person
outside could understand the games that they were playing. He knew the
rules of the games. But he was outsider; they were inside. He needed
to come in. He had never come in. His mind focused on the thoughts:' I
   need to come in.'

   但卻沒有come in
